Periscope No 25: Sergeant S Pittman 4th Battalion AIF
Description
Hand-held periscope No 25. The periscope has a cylindical section, with both the eyepiec and the optic lense covered by brown chamois leather bags, tied in place. The periscope is contained within a brown leather case, and is inscribed 'Periscope no 25 (x6 [zero with a vertical bar through it] 70) No 1543, R & J Beck Ltd 1916"
History / Summary
This periscope was used by Sergeant S. Pittman 4876 of the 4th Battalion in his work as a member of the intelligence section. Periscopes were widely used in the static conditions of trench warfare.
