Watering point, on the Tagessi River
Description
The Tagessi River flows into the bay not far from the watering point pictured. A native ferry can be seen, which is the outcome of a combination of native and army ideas, with its 44-gallon drums and outrigger. A native canoe can be seen coming down the river laden with 'sac sac' (roofing material made from sago palm) which has been cut for use on a native compound at Torokina. Also visible is a improvised floating craft fashioned from two discarded aircraft belly tanks, with which the lads amused themselves in their recreational time. The hut on the right belongs to the Australian New Guinea Administration Unit. Below the watering point the river was used for general ablutions and the cleaning of jeeps.
