Description

When a Japanese submarine was seen off the N.S.W coast early in 1942, Winckel hunted it down, bombed and sank it - the first enemy submarines to be destroyed by aerial attack in Australian waters. Winckel is of Dutch ancestry and was born in Java. Netherlands East Indies Air Force; 1st Lieutenant W F A Winckel, NEIA.
