Description

An Australian soldier is pictured standing naked and waist deep in the river, where he has driven in his jeep to be washed. Dargie has noted, "Here the river runs over a bed of waterworn pebbles, the solid residue of the volcanic agglomerate washed from the mountains. On either side are the swamps and flats of kunai grass, peaceful looking places wherein the other war against fever and typhus must still be fought. This sketch was made towards evening, and in a few minutes the nude driver at work on his vehicle must be fully clothed. The blue mass of the Finisterre Range is in the distance".
