Bridge near Pharsala
Description
This bridge, which was on the mainline of withdrawal of the ANZAC Corps, was the scene of much congestion of traffic during the withdrawal. The German Air Force attempted to bomb the bridge, missed it, but hit an explosives truck nearby, with the result that a huge crater was made in the approach to the bridge. The crater was 25 feet in diameter and about 16 feet deep and caused trucks to bank up for 10 miles with consequent heavy strafing from enemy aircraft. Under the personal direction of the Chief Engineer of ANZAC Corps, Brigadier C.S Steele, MC, VD, all hands were employed at filling in the crater and cutting a detour and eventually traffic was moving again.
