Description

Described in the Official War History as 'Yannina', and also known as Ioannina, the Greek town pictured here experienced the fortunes of war on several occasions during the 1939-45 conflicts. Captured by the Italians in their attack on Greece in 1940, but recaptured shortly afterwards. Was the Headquarters of the Greek Epirus Army during the German invasion of 1941 until Adolf Hitler's German Division reached the city, when the Epirus Army surrendered. The Bishop of Yannina was prominent in arranging for the surrender of the Greek forces in the area.
