View of Alikarnassos and Iraklion
Description
Iraklion (or Heraklion) in left distance, and Nea Alikarnassos right in distance, as seen from positions held by 2/4th Australian Infantry Battalion in May 1941 when attached to the 14th (British) Infantry Brigade. According to local report, the Australians trapped German paratroops in the cornfield in the foreground and killed them by setting fire to the crop.
