Description

A huddled mass of fighting figures, drawn in outline in sharp angular shapes, suggestive of the severity and chaos of battle. Grosz's early expectations that "war will not only rekindle repressed instincts which lie dormant inside us all, but also truly liberate people" very soon proved to have been illusory. His rapidly-drawn lithographs graphically express his deep anger at the misery caused by war. His choice of lithography as a medium was a purely democratic one, enabling more people to see his work.
