Private Edna Goon
This portrait is of Private Edna Goon (service number VFX91992) of the Australian Army Medical Women’s Service (AMWS). It was drawn by Geoffrey Mainwaring when Private Goon was attached to the 2/6th Australian General Hospital at Rocky Creek, Queensland. Edna Goon was the second child of Frank Shum Goon, a herbalist, and Ada Elizabeth Mahlook. She was born in Ballarat in 1912. Of the eight Goon siblings, six enlisted to serve in the Second World War despite the racially discriminative enlistment policies in place at the time.
Her brothers were Squadron Leader Roy Francis (service number 251686), Bertram Ronald (service number V21360/VX55191), Eric William (service number VX141455), Norman Geoffrey (service number VX80282), and Ernest (Ernie) Leonard (service number VX115779).
Private Goon was discharged from service in 1946 and later married, taking on the surname McDonald.
