Gian Singh (Indian Army)
Description
One of the seven Indian prisoners-of-war of the Japanese who escaped while working on the airstrip at Wewak. Four died during their trek and the remaining three were found by Allied troops in poor health near a native garden where they stole vegetables from the pro-Japanese native inhabitants. Of the three, Gian Singh was the only one to speak English. He requested that he be given an English style haircut and shave and was quite delighted when his request was given, 104 Australian Casualty Clearing Station, Aitape, New Guinea.
