Cover design for 'Angry Penguins'
This drawing shows Tucker's concern about the licentious behaviour in the blacked-out streets of Melbourne in wartime. The drunken figure of a digger sprawls with the sole of his foot outwards, and his hand in distorted perspective. At his feet lies the discarded figure of a woman, her head reduced to a surreal symbol of an eye and a crescent smile. To increase the nightmare allusion, more biomorphic shapes float in the single light of the street lamp, like moths attracted to a flame. This is the original cover design for 'Angry Penguins', 1945 issue.
