Description
The original sketch for this painting was made on the back of the programme while the artist was enjoying the concert. These concerts were organised by Army Education Service, and were varied - usually featuring one or two of the best symphonies and concerti. The concerts were often of two hours duration, with an interval and were in some suitable building or hut such as the Education centre with its 'sac sac' roof. It the weather was fine and the speaker strong, the crowd inside was only a fraction of the audience; the remainder, enjoying the fresh air would lounge around on the ground outside, quietly smoking. Maps were a feature of such centres.
