Description

In 1936 Crozier was commissioned to paint a number of scenes of women’s work during the First World War for the Australian War Memorial’s collection. As these were created some time after the war, it is understood that some subjects were derived from Crozier's experience and that some were drawn from photographs in the Memorial's collection. This painting is almost identical to the photograph E01305, which was photographed in 1917 at the 1st Australian Casualty Clearing Station. Crozier’s movements on the Western Front as an official was artist during the First World War would have more likely led him to encounter the 3rd Australian Casualty Clearing Station, which may explain why the artist, or a later source, has added this unit to the artwork’s title.
