Outside the perimeter, tractor snigging logs for the sawmill
Description
Official war artist, William Dargie wrote of this work: "Through a jungle pool of mud which almost covers the catepillars of the tractor, logs of timber are dragged to the sawmill. The American Command took rather a lean view of the RAAF habit of going so far outside the perimeter to gather their logs. Something was said about interring with lines of fire. However, it would have been very difficult if not impossible to get the required timber elsewhere, and it was wanted urgently for the construction of bridges, an oil pipe-line jetty, huts, etc. Most of the personnel of 10 Works Sawmilling Unit were men who had had experience of timber work before the war".
