Lieutenant, Royal Netherlands East Indies Air Force in Australia
Description
Depicts a head and shoulders portrait of an unidentified officer of the Royal Netherlands East Indies Air Force during the Second World War. Dargie noted, "This officer commenced his training in Java when a call was made for volunteers after Japan began her southward advance. As the fall of the Indies was imminent, he, with others of his squadron, was transferred to Australia. Later they went to the USA to complete their much-interrupted course of training, and were returned to Australia in the middle of 1943. At the time this portrait was painted they were expecting to be moved north for operational flying against the Japanese".
