Description

A Chinese boy greeting a member of the 8th Australian Division in the manner universal to children in Malaya, the salutation 'Hello Joe!' accompanied by the 'thumbs up' sign. This was before the Japanese occupation of the island. Griffin notes 'So far as the [Malayans] were concerned, the AIF seemed to be very popular, especially with the children. Wherever the Diggers went the kids greeted them with the thumbs up sign and cries of, 'Hullo Joe'. And prehaps the AIF did pay more for things they might have got for them, especially curios and gifts to send home, but Australians were not used to bargaining'.
