Chipping ship's side, HMAS Napier
Description
The task of chipping and painting an iron ship is endless. Whenever possible, hands suspend themselves over the side in large numbers with shipping hammers, red leads and grey paint to fight the corrosion. The water gushing over the plank is the cooling water discharge from the diesel. The two unidentified men, Royal Australian Navy, were originally sketched at work in Colombo Harbour from a vantage point consisting of a specially arranged boom held by wire stays, which supported the artist 5.4 metres outside the ship's side. The drawing is coloured to help convey the contrast between the mahogany coloured sun burnt men and and the redleaded and grey ship's side,
