Description

Turkish Barracks and the Baghdad Railway from the city of Aleppo.
Thomas Henry Ivers - No.5259, Sapper, 2nd Light Horse Signal Troop - 11 to 17 Reinforcements (October 1915 - April 1916), was born in November 1889 in Petersham, NSW. He enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force in August 1915, where his occupation was listed as an artist. He embarked from Melbourne in January 1916 on HMAT Africa. Ivers was ranked as a Sapper in the 2nd Light Horse Signal Troop in the 11 to 17 Reinforcements. He eventually obtained the rank of Sergeant in the 1st Light Horse Signal Troop and was employed as a map maker for the War Records Section in Palestine. During his time in the Middle East, Ivers met George Lambert, the official war artist, who was on assignment to document significant Australian battles. From September 1919 to February 1920 Ivers was granted leave to assist Lambert with his commissions in London. Ivers helped with the background landscape of paintings and he is the sitter in Lambert's iconic Sergeant of the Light Horse (1920), currently in the National Gallery of Victoria collection. Ivers returned to Australia on HMAT Ceramic in May 1920 and was discharged from the AIF in June 1920.
