Starlight, racer and troop horse
A profile study of a brown troop horse facing the left of the image and wearing full marching order, bridle with reins over his neck. Light Horse unit; 'Starlight', full marching order with mess tin, forage bag, shoeing case, greatcoat and spare blanket attached to left side of saddle, bandolier around neck, 1912 pattern saddle and bridle, horse has been trace clipped. A brief indication of the ground in dotted brush strokes below, and a patch of blue sky silhouettes the horse's head and back. The horse wears a 1902 pattern bridle, 1912 Universal Pattern saddle with saddle wallets, fodder bag, mess tin, and rolled blanket and mess tin attached to it, as well as a nine pouch ammunition bandolier around its neck. Starlight has had its long winter coat clipped short, leaving only head, upper neck and legs with long hair. Horses like Starlight, with a high proportion of thoroughbred in their breeding, were often used in impromptu 'race meetings' during rest periods and immediately after the end of the war, which were keenly contested immensely popular with light horsemen.
