Amiens from near Querrieu
Description
While 'Amiens from near Querrieu' is not dated, it was probably executed between 1918 and 1919 while he was working at St Johns. It depicts the countryside between Querrieu and Amiens. Querrieu was the main dressing station for the 5th Field Ambulance and also served as a headquarters and as a billet for troops fighting on the Somme. The town of Amiens can be seen in the background, dominated by the Cathedral. Longstaff made several watercolours of this scene, one of which was sketched during shelling. These works would form the basis for the oil painting.
