Description

Gallipoli soldier wearing slouch hat and medals. Nolan was very interested in Australian archetypes and faces and he wanted to show that these bushmen and city lads had been isolated at Gallipoli with all their exuberance, youth and innocence, to be confronted with the horrors of war. It relates to Nolan's concept of the hero as part of the Australian and ancient Greek ideal.
