Afternoon sun - SS "Laconia"
Description
Looking into the glaring afternoon sun as SS "Laconia" steams across the Arabian Sea to Bombay. Submarine look-outs find the light very trying; to sunbathers it is a paradise, although dangerous. In the foreground one of the ship's 6-inch guns. In the earlier part of the war this ship was employed as an Armed Merchant Cruiser, with no guns on the centre line, with the result that when she was being converted into a troopship, to be defensively armed, it was necessary to leave both the after guns, Arabian Sea.
