Description

After the sinking of H.M.S "Latona", the "Tobruk Run" was cancelled until the next moonless period. Having been forced back to Tobruk on this occasion, HMS "Wolborough"made a second attempt on the following night, leaving Tobruk under cover of darkness with SS Jebul Kebi in tow and escorted by two motor launches, which left during the night. At dawn, air escort was received for a short time. Parted tow off Mersa Matruh - two air alarms received, but no attack. At speed of 8 knots the trip took 45 hours, the usual destroyer trip being approximately 16 hours. "Wolborough" formerly a Hull trawler, was built in 1937. Of about 600 tons, her speed is 13-13 knots. Taken over in 1939 by the Admiralty as Anti-submarine vessel, she mounts a 4-inch gun for'ard and has a good array of small arms weapons, including captured Italian Bredas. The crew of 28 are mainly Scotch and Shetland fishermen. On Tobruk run since 1941, Mediterranean Sea.
