HMAS ships at Aitape
Description
HMAS ships included in the painting are HMAS 'Australia' in the foreground, Australian cruiser, HMAS 'Shropshire' in the foreground, destroyers HMAS 'Warramunga' astern of 'Shropshire' and HMAS 'Arunta' (not shown), together with American destroyers and a merchant ship at anchor off American-held Aitape. Naval vessels are seen supporting ground forces by bombarding Japanese positions on either side of the area. Flying overhead are RAAF Beauforts. Japanese positions are behind HMAS 'Australia'.
