"Kongo" off Barrow, England
Description
Picture of the Japanese warship "Kongo" asail off Barrow-in-Furness in England. The first of the Kongo class battlecruisers, she was the among the most heavily armed of any naval vessel at the time of construction. Launched in 1913, she was designed by the British naval engineer George Thurston and built by the Vickers Shipbuilding Company. She is flying the Imperial Japanese Navy rising sun ensign. The painting was on probably displayed at the Japanese Imperial Naval Academy on the island of Eta Jima in the inter-war period.
