Unloading barges
Description
Section showing where the landing barges pulled in to unload their cargo. As the wharf was wrecked by bombing, the Liberty ships were unloaded onto these barges in the Bay. The 7th Australian Docks Operating Company did an excellent job, working 24 hours a day, seven days a week, moving cargo. The buildings on the left, badly strafed by Allied planes, are used by Movement Control and Docks Operating Company as Orderly Rooms. The building in the background was used by the Royal Australian Navy as Headquarters. The capture of Madang and its construction as a base, was a purely Australian operation, Madang, New Guinea.
