Bonne nuit! les neutres (Good night, neutrals)
Description
A boat has been torpedoed, and some of the bodies float in the sea. A German sailor looks out from his submarine and with his hands to his mouth cries: 'Good night! neutrals'. Neutrals refers to the men who are dead and no longer enemies. Coutin 1987 (This work was not published, but was intended for publication in 'Figaro', February-March 1917. There is a drawing of this subject in a private collection (Coutin 118B) and a sketch, dated 1916, in the Musee St Denis, Rheims (118C). It was included in 'De la Marne au Rhin', vol. 2, p. 31 (118E).
