Dans le Nord (In the North)
Description
Women, children, and old men wait on the footpath at a crossroad. A German soldier watches over them. A large number of inhabitants of Lille, and other occupied towns in northern France, were arrested and taken to Germany to harvest crops and work in munitions factories. This work was published in the French daily newspaper 'Le Figaro', 2 August 1916, p.3 (89A). It was included in "De la Marne au Rhin I', 87 (89E). There is also an oil painting of this subject (89H).
