Description

Julian Ashton was born in England and moved to Australia in 1878 to work for the 'Illustrated Australian News'. He later worked for the 'Australasian Sketcher' and 'Picturesque Atlas of Australasia', before founding the Sydney Art School. Ashton became the central figure in a group that included Charles Conder, Henry Fullwood and Girolamo Nerli, working together in the Hawkesbury River country. This image depicts an officer, in uniform, from the rear, a member of the colonial military forces, the New South Wales Artillery.
