Soldiers resting
Description
French soldiers resting near a cave between combat. One is writing a letter by candlelight, a second is seated beside him, and a third is lying down, head not visible. Other soldiers are seen lying down within the black shadow of the cave with only legs and boots visible. Produced in 1917, 'Soldiers resting' is one of a series of brightly coloured woodcuts depicting French soldiers at the front. They are unusual in their formal simplicity, the figures almost caricature-like, yet possessing a striking sense of individuality and vibrancy.
