[Return of the Anzacs]
A well shot sequence showing the arrival of a heavily laden troop ship at Port Melbourne probably in September, 1918; the troops were about to commence their first home leave after fighting overseas. Soldiers are seen waving from and hanging over the railing, throwing baggage down a ramp and holding out their hats for offerings from a man on the wharf. A senior officer gives an address to men assembled on the deck. Cars bedecked with flags of different nations arrive in a stream, stopping by the gangplank by the ship. The men are picked up as they disembark the ship. Following scenes are of the parade of cars driving down Melbourne's main streets (one scene identified as Swanston Street) through cheering, flag waving crowds which include groups such as nurses, school children and 'friendly societies'. The cars pass beneath a banner which reads " Well Done/ Sth Melbourne/Welcomes You Home". Following scenes are taken at barracks and include excellent slow panning shots of officers and men. A foot parade through St Kilda follows, photographic operators can be seen. This film appears to have been professionally shot and may be an official film or made for newsreel.
