Description

This film has been identified as being taken during the battle of the Eastern Solomons 24 August 1942. The majority of the film deals with the aircraft carrier USS Enterprise and the three bombs that hit the carrier during this battle. The first bomb landed near number 3 elevator, the second 10 ft from the first exploding in the gun gallery causing secondary explosions due to the ammunition stored there. The third bomb landed near number 2 elevator and although it failed to explode it punctured a hole in the carrier deck. There are also good shots of an Aichi "Val" Japanese Dive Bomber attacking the ship. Note that the bombing scenes in the film have been printed in reverse. It is unknown whether this is an error or has been intentional for security reasons. See photograph in Norman Polmar's "Aircraft Carriers" p251.
