Description

Members of the 1st Australian Marine Supply Platoon at work netting fish, setting rigged lines, and clearing fish traps. Approximately 2,000lbs to 3,000lbs of fresh fish were being delivered to Port Moresby weekly by this unit and distributed to all hospitals in the area. Supply Depot Platoon: appreciating the need for a continual supply of fresh fruits for hospital patients in the Port Moresby area, and having received information that native gardens in the Yule Island area were producing more than local requirements, the army had a small detachment of experienced personnel on or around Yule Island for the purpose of bartering native ration scale items for fresh fruits with the local inhabitants. Identified personnel: Lieut. P. Hanna, Pte. J. Fullerton, W.O.M. Vesper (RAE Australian Water Tpt. GP).
