Description

The story of the Salvation Army in the Western Desert. The Red Shield has won honour and regard throughout the battlefield by the kindly service it has given to the diggers in all areas. Commissioner Bill Tibbs known to all of us as "Big hearted Bill" is welcomed with his Salvation Army crews and trucks every where. A truck draws into a unit and soon a group gathers around to learn the news. Big Bill tunes in the radio and while they wait leads a chorus. Back in the army kitchen a number of boilers protected from the desert winds by a few sheets of galvanised iron are being filled by the boys for the evening coffee round. Else where on of the trucks is making a circuit with books for issue or exchange. Back to coffee urns. 2,000 gallons of coffee that means over 30000 cups are distributed by Big Bill's unit each month. In the dry dusty desert the genial stimulatory brew is thirstly appreciated. Wherever there are troops there you will find the Red Shield trucks with boilers of beverage and boxes of biscuits. Those who donated the trucks and those who support the army will rejoice in the knowledge that their gifts are being put to yeoman service by Big Bill and his comrades of the Red Shield.
