Two RAAF Mirage jet fighter squadrons at the RAAF base at Butterworth are in readiness for the operational phase of the five-nation military exercise Bersatu Padu. Nos. 3 and 75 Squadrons will play a major part in this exercise which will commence on 13 June 1970. RAF Phantoms, Vulcans and Canberras, representing the enemy, will attempt to destroy Butterworth air base. The Mirages will defend the base and nearby Penang Island by interception and ground attacks against enemy aircraft and troop concentrations. The exercise is designed to train the combined forces of Australia, Britain, Malaysia, New Zealand and Singapore under conditions that would apply after the British withdrawal.
