Description

The RAAF identifies wreckage of a RAAF C-47 Dakota which belonged to No.2 Medical Air Evacuation Transport Unit. This aircraft on a flight from Biak Island with 28 people aboard, crashed in the 14,000 foot high mountains of West Irian on 18 September 1945. The wreckage was first sighted by Mr Jerry Reeder, an American missionary, in 1967, whilst flying over the area. In 1968, the wreckage was positively identified by Mr Reeder and two other Americans.
