Description

Dai Toa Nyusu (Greater East Asia News) produced by Nippon Eigasha (Japanese Film Company) for screening in Japanese occupied Netherlands East Indies. Topics covered are; 1. Japanese Aichi Navy Type 0 'Jake' and Mitsubishi F1M 'Pete' seaplanes on patrol over Indonesian waters. 2. A radio bulletin about Japanese victories. Shows Japanese warships in action Mitsubishi A6M 'Zero' fighters and Nakajima B5N 'Kate' torpedo bombers taking off from an aircraft carrier deck. Scenes of a ship under attack and sinking are of HMAS Vampire (timecode 01.05 55.06); the coastline of Sri Lanka is visible, with some particularly identifiable lagoons. Vampire was with HMS Hermes when she was attacked; Hermes was sunk first, and then the aircraft returned an hour or so later for Vampire. 3. Solomons occupied by the Japanese Army, 2 May 1942. Shows attacks by Allied aircraft on Japanese warships and downing of Allied aircraft. Japanese troops in action on land. 4. Yenangyaung, Burma oil centre occupied by Japanese. Shows Japanese 75mm guns and infantry in action. Japanese troops with a knocked out General Stuart tank and wrecked British jeeps and trucks. 5. Japanese troops cross the northern Burma frontier into China, May 1942. Shows captured Allied stockpiles of ammunition and rubber tyres. Japanese tanks and infantry in action. 6. Japanese airfield in the Solomons showing parked Mitsubishi 'Zero' fighters and pilots prior to take off. Mitsubishi 'Zeros' and Aichi D3 'Vals' taking off from airfield. Aerial shots of formations of Mitsubishi G3M 'Nell' bombers. Gun camera film of aerial dog fights. 7. Japanese Navy in action featuring "Zero" aircraft taking off from aircraft carrier decks. (Japanese language soundtrack for this segment) Japanese light cruiser firing main guns. 8. Titles on screen "Alhamdulilah..." = God be thanked. Asia has been returned to Asians. We must work for the unity of Greater East Asia. 9. 28 May 1942 Military representatives from Manchukuo, China & Thailand arrive at Singapore and inspect captured British equipment including 25 pounder field guns and Bofors 40 mm anti aircraft guns. 10. A montage of battle scenes featuring tanks artillery and aerial shots of formations of Mitsubishi 'Betty' bombers with soundtrack of a patriotic song. Unrelated shot of a ship being bombed in a harbour. Unrelated extract from a Japanese feature film.
