Description
During operation Oboe 2 the two approaches to the shipping wharf, 400 yards offshore, were destroyed. A temporary approach was made from welded steel pontoons. Film shows construction of a new wooden jetty by 1 Australian Port Construction Company. Also Indian soldiers, ex Japanese POW, arriving at Balikpapan. NX12043 Lieutenant R.C. Rowe taking bearings and level readings prior to marking positions for new piles. NX111106 Sapper J. Riley marking off top of newly driven pile showing amount to be cut off. NX139513 Sapper W.V. Austin sharpening his axe with a hand stone. Soldiers helping NX138136 Sapper F.E. Smith. Also identified: NX24762 Sergeant C. Wilkes; NX88331 Corporal J.M. Still; NX177729 Sergeant R.P. Christie.
