Description

To provide additional signal channels between BCOF HQ on the island of Eta Jima and Kure on the mainland, BCOF Signal Section laid a multi-channel cable entailing overhead, underground and submarine cable laying. It was the first time in the history of the Australian Army Signal Corps that an undertaking of such magnitude was carried out. Much of the equipment used was improvised and some materials used had been recovered from Japanese dumps. Note: These shots were taken over a period of weeks and although we frequently contacted the Signal Section requesting information, no advice was received regarding the submarine cable laying. As this operation is unlikely to be repeated, the series will probably remain incomplete. Also identified: Signaller Gould of Sydney, NSW; Lieutenant B W Buckley of Longreach, QLD.
