Description

Australian servicemen's dependants arrived in Kure on the 11 June 1947, in the Merkur from Australia. The families, twenty seven wives and twenty three children, came from all Australian states except Tasmania. After disembarking from Merkur the families embarked on Akitsuki Maru, the BCOF leave ship. They went from Kure to the HQ BCOF Dependants Housing Area on the island of Eta Jima. The families were greeted by NX201 Camp Commandant Lieutenant Colonel (Lt Col) Harvey Ennis Gale OBE. Floral bouquets were presented to the wives by Japanese school girls clad in kimonos.
