Dr Evatt's tour of BCOF installation
Dr and Mrs Evatt, as guests of the Commander-in-Chief (C-in-C) 34 (VX20321, VX80578) Lieutenant-General Horace Clement Hugh Robertson CBE DSO, made a tour of the BCOF installations today on their arrival in Japan. They visited the Hiroshima area, Kure ASC, 34th Australian Infantry Brigade and the Kure Docks area. They arrived by launch from Eta Jima at Ujina, the port of Hiroshima, where they were transported by staff cars to the spot where the first atom bomb was dropped almost two years ago. They then left for Kure, where they were met by the 34th Australian Infantry Brigade Commander, 26 (N392) Brigadier (Brig) Ronald Nicholas Lamond Hopkins CBE, while in the Kure area the party was met by the 34th ASC Commander, Lieutenant-Colonel R Durance, who accompanied them on an inspection of his area. After the party had lunched with Brig Hopkins, Dr Evatt and the C-in-C shared the general salute by the 66th Australian Infantry Battalion Guard of Honour, and then proceeded to the Kure Docks area, where the party was met by the American Naval Liaison Officer, Lieutenant-Commander F R Raleigh, who conducted the tour through the docks area and pointed out the materials being prepared for reparations.
