Military Cross presentation to Major Harry Smith DPR/TV/539
Gallantry awards were presented to 11 Australian soldiers in a ceremony at Nui Dat, South Vietnam; nine of the awards were won by officers and men of Delta Company of the 6th Battalion, RAR. Awards included a Military Cross, Distinguished Service Medal, three Military Medals and six Mention in Despatches. The former Commander of the Australian Task Force, Brigadier (Brig) O D Jackson, who himself was awarded the DSO, presented the awards. Accompanying Brig Jackson was Australia's new Task Force Commander, Brig S C Graham, who was met at the ceremony by the Senior RAAF Officer at the Task Force, Group Captain Peter Raw. After addressing the parade Brig Jackson presented the Military Cross to Major Harry Smith who commanded Delta Company during its historic battle at Long Tan in August 1966.
