Description

Newsreel item on the first boarding and capture of a naval vessel by the United States Navy since 1815. An anti-submarine Task Force Group consisting of the CVE (escort carrier) USS Guadalcanal and five destroyers located and subsequently captured German submarine U-505 on 4 June 1944 in the area of the Cape Verde Islands. The films shows the stages in the capture involving the carrier's Wildcat fighters and destroyer escorts depth charge and gun fire. Shows the boarding party in action, the attempted scuttling by the German crew and the successfull salvage party operation and Captain Daniel V Gallery, commander of USS Guadalcanal. Concludes with an aerial shot of U-505 under tow by the USS Guadalcanal. The capture of the submarine was kept a strict secret until the end of the war with Germany so as not to alert the Germans. If the Germans had known of the capture of a U-boat they would have changed their codes.
