Captain Stevenson resigns: Melbourne-Evans collision
Description
A kinescope recording on 16mm film of a GTV9 report on the announcement of the resignation of Captain John Philip Stevenson. Captain Stevenson was the commanding officer of HMAS Melbourne during the Melbourne's collision with the USS Frank E Evans on 3 June 1969. He was court martialled for two charges of negligence and which were subsequently dropped and he was honourably acquitted. There was much speculation by observers as to the reason why Captain Stevenson resigned, the mostly likely of which was that he felt he was a victim of circumstances.
