Description

HMAS Melbourne flying three battle flags and cleared for action on the day when the German High Seas Fleet surrendered. At the surrender each German vessel was assigned to the custody of a British ship, which sent aboard a party to inspect it for hidden explosives and instruct the captain. HMAS Melbourne had responsibility for the German light cruiser Nurnberg. The 74 German ships were then escorted to Scapa Flow, where they were interned. All were scuttled on 21 June 1919 by order of Rear Admiral Von Reuter, the German Commanding Officer at Scapa Flow.
