Informal portrait of 617 Company Sergeant Major (CSM) Wilfred Henry Ebborn, and 823 Sergeant (Sgt) John Paul, both of the 10th Battalion. CSM Ebborn, a native of Oxfordshire, England had previously served with the Oxfordshire Light Infantry and embarked with the rank of Private with B Company on HMAT Ascanius from Adelaide on 20 October 1914. Whilst serving at Gallipoli he was promoted, firstly to Sergeant and then to Company Sergeant Major. After being awarded the Military Medal for bravery in the field, he was killed in action on 25 July 1916 aged 33 and is commemorated on the Villers-Bretonneux Memorial. Sgt Paul , a native of Dumbarton, Scotland had previously served with the Scotch Territorials and embarked with the rank of Corporal also with B Company on HMAT Ascanius from Adelaide on 20 October 1914. At Gallipoli he was promoted to Sergeant and on 15 August 1916, aged 25, died of wounds received in action in France and was buried in the St Sever Cemetery, Rouen, France.
