Description
A Chinese family outside one of the newly constructed homes, in the new Chinatown, situated near Matupi crater. Although razed by allied bombing, the town commenced to reappear soon after occupation by 11 Division. Under the guidance of the Officers from the Australian New Guinea Administrative Unit HQ, 1,500 Chinese and 300 Malay, applied typical Eastern industry to the area and cleared the wreckage to establish a new village. This was complete with commerical, cultural, sporting and educational facilities.
