Description

Outdoor group portrait of 19th Reinforcements to the 2nd Battalion. Most of the men in this group embarked from Sydney aboard SS Port Nicholson on 8 November 1916. Seated on the bench, fourth from the left is Lieutenant Francis Henry Haylen, who later embarked with the 22nd Reinforcements, 2nd Battalion, and was killed in action in Belgium on 21 September 1917. Also in the group, position unknown, is 6102 Private (Pte) David Walters who was killed in action in France on 9 April 1917. This photograph was sent by Walters to his employers, Thomas Keath and Frank James Smith, who had a farm near Boree Creek, NSW. Many of their farm workers enlisted and left personal items with them for safekeeping until they returned. This group portrait was retained by the Keath family after David Walters was killed.
