Untitled (Iraq, barbie, fashion)
'Untitled (Iraq, Barbie, Fashion)' is an artist book that has been assembled utilising existing documents that artist Stuart Ringholt has collected from the Internet. The images that feature throughout the book relate directly to the title of the work. Photographs of the war in Iraq, Barbie dolls and fashion models are juxtaposed throughout the Book. For example, one page features a Barbie doll lying at the beach in contrast with an image of David Bloom reporting from Iraq. Another shows a model watching television while on the opposite page a women appears covering her head with a rug, with smoke filling the background of the photograph.
In this work, Ringholt modifies and augments popular media images and consumer objects to explore how images of war and human suffering are used by western culture industries for their emotional context. By contrasting these images, Ringholt questions how we as consumers can truly understand images of war, when they are readily re-contexualised and pictured in our popular culture.
