Description

IED entrenching tool made by 8520859 Corporal (Cpl) Gerard (Gerry) Carroll. The jaws of the tool are made from an entrenching shovel blade and painted. Eyes have been painted at the top of the blade. Carroll has welded stronger steel onto the blade to form the jaws. Cpl Carroll enlisted in the Australian Army on 16 October 2006 and completed his service on 29 August 2013. During this time he was deployed to Afghanistan from 1 October 2009 - 20 January 2010. During this deployment he held the rank of Craftsman (CFN) Metalsmith in the MRTF -2 (Mentoring and Reconstruction Task ForceWorkshop). Carroll was the only Metalsmith in the Battle Group and his work included all repairs and metal fabrication work including welding repairs to Armoured vehicles, B vehicles, fabrication of specialist tooling, and equipment.
